To overcome the COVID-19 pandemic, the Agency of Marine and Fisheries (DKP) of East Java Province through the Department of Agriculture, Food Security, and Fisheries of Probolinggo City held a Sanitation Hygiene Development Guidance that took place in the Mayangan Village Hall on Wednesday (10/6).

Probolinggo Mayor Hadi Zainal Abidin appreciated the assistance of medical equipment facilities provided by the East Java Provincial Government. The assistance was for 5 urban villages with coastal residents who mostly work as fishermen. In the current situation and uncertain season, the economy of fishermen has declined.

"The five urban villages are Mayangan, Sukabumi, Mangunharjo, Pilang, Ketapang urban village , and Mayangan TPI (Fish Auction Place)," he said.

Habib Hadi explained, in dealing with the situation and conditions of this pandemic, we must not panic but still need to be vigilant and adopt the health protocol.

Be vigilant in this context is to maintain health by diligently exercising and getting nutritious food, to have a good rest, applying physical distancing, hand washing with soap and running water, and wearing masks during outdoor activities.

"To the representatives of the fishermen, I hope you all participate actively in educating each other and preparing to face a ‘new normal’ or coexisting with COVID 19. By continuing to pay attention to healthy lifestyles and keep spirits up," he said.

Meanwhile, the head of East Java Province’s Marine and Fisheries Agency, Moh. Gunawan Saleh said that the sanitation development of fishermen's village was based on the instruction of the East Java Governor, Khofifah Indar Parawansa, as an effort to help fishermen amid the COVID-19 pandemic.

"We want to actively participate in and support government programs in delivering aid to the fishermen. In this case, we also provide information on COVID-19 preventive efforts," he said.

The distribution of health facility equipment, he added, is distributed to 22 coastal districts in East Java. "With the help of medical equipment facilities ahead of the new normal era, it is expected to be able to assist the daily activities of fishermen during the pandemic by adopting health protocols," he said.

The aid of medical devices distributed was 2 thermal guns, 20 liters of hand sanitizer, 6 sets of a portable sink, 96 liters of a soap dispenser, 140 liters of disinfectant liquid, 6 sets of sprayers and 800 pieces of mask for residents of fishing villages. Besides, there are 2 sets of billboards, 10 sets of banners, and 20 sets of posters.

"This (aid) is an effort to accelerate countermeasures in the form of increased early alertness, preparedness as well as anticipatory actions to prevent, detect, treat, and respond to others as needed. The goal is as a medium of public awareness of the dangers of COVID-19 and efforts to break the chain of the spread of the virus," he explained.

The event was also attended by Vice Mayor Mochammad Soufis Subri and a number of fisherman representatives.  (alfien_tr)
